Our Pastor

Welcome to Mount Zion Lutheran Church! I am Pastor Kimberly Ryan. I wish to invite you to visit us on Sundays for worship, or for Bible Study, or any of our fellowship activities and service projects.

We are a congregation made up of members and guests who have been with us for many years, some only a few years, and brand new members, too! What we all have in common is a desire to grow in our faith in a good and loving God, made known to us in Jesus and through the scriptures. We seek to serve those in need in our neighborhood and around the world.

I came to Mt. Zion with a background in social work and theology, having worked in private mental health and youth ministry for many years. I studied religion and social work in my undergraduate education at Augustana College in SD, and have Master’s education in both areas, as well. Most applicable is my Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary.

My greatest joy is to lead worship and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and hope for our daily lives based on the promises of God, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

When I am not doing church work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two adult sons, who are currently college students. I love to hike, swim, cook, and have long discussions with friends about current topics. As a family, we enjoy watching and processing movies of all kinds! I would love to meet you and hear your story!

Robin Arneson – Treasurer

I have been a member at Mt. Zion since 1996, and have served as the Treasurer for over 20 years. I am happy that I can use my talents to serve my congregation.

We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.  Romans 12: 6-8

Joan Christopher – Financial Secretary

I have been a member at Mt. Zion since 1965, and your Financial Secretary since 1982. I have 7 grandchildren, and three of them are triplets!

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

I have been a member at Mt. Zion since 2005, and have been the organist/pianist during that entire time. I cherish the wonderful people here and look forward to many more years to come.

I have been a part of Mt. Zion since 1982.  I grew up attending Mt. Zion, and now my own family is growing up here, too!

Church History

As early as 1876 the Swedish people of Hudson, having no church of their own, and being interested in church work, attended services in the Norwegian Lutheran Church.

In 1884, Rev. A.F. Tornell, who was pastor in Stillwater, held the first Swedish services here. Mr. Warner, a lay-preacher from Stillwater, also visited Hudson and conducted services.

In 1887, the Norwegian Ebenezer Church was built and the Swedish people upon invitation from the Norwegian pastor Rev. Melland, held their services there until the time they could build a church home of their own.

It was in December 1893, that Rev. A. Bengtson, who was serving Star Prairie and New Richmond, was asked to come to Hudson every third Sunday and preach. Under his leadership and guidance the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church was organized on January 7, 1895, with a membership of forty communicants and forty-six children.

In 1897, our congregation was received into the Minnesota Conference and the Augustana Synod.

The Ladies Aid Society purchased the church lot in 1897 at a cost of $250. In 1898, plans for the building of the church were drawn and the work commenced. Upon the completion of the basement, services were held there. In 1901, the superstructure was built and Christmas Matins were held in the completed sanctuary that year. In 1910, the parsonage was built on the lot south of the church to be the residence of the pastor and his family.

In 1968, the congregation relocated to our current church building at 13th and Summer Streets. The old Zion Church was sold to the St. Croix Valley Arts Guild.

With the move to the hill top area of Hudson, the name of the congregation was changed from Zion Lutheran to Mt. Zion Lutheran.
